Description

This book explores the linkages between trade and environment and the problems developing countries face in coping with the challenges of trade liberalization and environmental protection. The leather industry has been identified as a thrust sector for export promotion in India but it is also perceived to be highly polluting as well.

This book is the first to examine in detail the impact of environmental requirements at home and abroad on Indian leather exports. Sankar and his associates identify the constraints and opportunities in the supply chain of the Indian leather industry, from production of hides and skins to the exports of leather and leather products. Thus evaluate the preparedness of the industry, particularly the tanning segment, in complying with the global and domestic environmental requirements.

The volume assesses the exporter's awareness of environmental requirements. It reviews the trends, composition, and direction of India's leather exports and suggests policy options for achieving this target. Further it outlines the steps needed to sustain India's comparative advantage in terms of factor endowments - a strong raw material base and cheap labour - while promoting sustainable development.

Readership

This study of environmental issues relating to a key export industry in India will be useful for researchers in trade and environmental policies, policymakers, environmentalists, Indian leather industry, chambers of commerce and trade associations. It will also be of value to students of foreign trade, economics, and leather technology.
