Home> About OUP India

Oxford University Press is the world's largest university press, publishing more than 4,500 new books a year; it has a presence in more than fifty countries and employs some 3,700 people worldwide.

OUP in India is an integral part of the Press's worldwide organization. Like OUP internationally, it propagates the liberal objectives of the University to further education and learning through publications that reflect the specific needs of the country that it serves.

History

OUP India was established in 1912 in Bombay (now Mumbai). After Mumbai, offices were established at Chennai and Kolkata, and an office at Delhi was opened in 1972. With the opening of the Delhi office, the headquarters of OUP India shifted from Mumbai to Delhi.

Publishing

OUP India's publishing operations currently fall into three distinct areas: academic, general and reference, higher education, and school education.

Its academic list, in the humanities and social sciences, is widely acknowledged to be the most distinguished in the world on subjects relating to South Asia. Its growing reference publishing in India is considered a pioneering effort in this exclusive field.

Recently, OUP India has embarked on an ambitious higher education programme aimed at meeting the requirements of Indian college and university students with special focus on the disciplines of engineering, computer science and management.

OUP India has a well-established educational publishing programme to cater to the key curriculum requirements of Indian schools from the pre-primary to the higher secondary level. It is acknowledged as a foremost English Language Teaching (ELT) publisher in the country. OUP India also has a rapidly growing list of texts in the humanities and social sciences as also in science and mathematics.

OUP India also publishes atlases and bilingual dictionaries in various Indian languages. Across the entire spectrum of OUP publishing in India, there is a specific regional component, fulfilling the vision of the Delegates of the Press, and serving the needs of the region's academic and educational community as their major university press.

Operations

As one of the largest publishers in India, OUP has four regional sales offices at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata with independent warehouses and showrooms in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Pune, Lucknow, Patna, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Ernakulam, Chandigarh and Jaipur.

These showrooms cater to the growing requirements of academics, school, college and university students, professional and research institutions, as also general readers.

OUP India has established a modern all-India Central Warehouse at NOIDA, near Delhi, which is spread over 25,000 sq. ft. Its business is supported by SAP with on-line connectivity with all offices and warehouses in India.
